American Battery Materials Expands Focus to Magnesium Recovery in Utah’s Paradox Basin
American Battery Materials, Inc. (ABM) has announced a significant expansion of its strategic extraction efforts in Utah’s Paradox Basin, now including magnesium recovery in addition to lithium. This move underscores the company’s commitment to supporting the U.S. energy transition and addressing the increasing demand for critical minerals in various high-growth sectors.
The Paradox Basin, already noted for its lithium deposits, is also rich in magnesium, a material recently classified as critical by the U.S. Department of Energy and the Department of Defense. ABM’s mineral rights encompass 743 claims over 14,260 acres, presenting a unique opportunity for the co-extraction of lithium and magnesium using advanced Direct Lithium Extraction (DLE) techniques. This approach is designed to minimize environmental impact by employing a closed-loop system that returns most of the extracted brine to its source, thereby reducing land use and avoiding the need for traditional mining methods.
David E. Graber, CEO of ABM, highlighted the strategic importance of this expansion, noting the growing demand for lightweight metals in the defense, aerospace, and automotive industries. The development of a domestic magnesium supply chain is seen as vital for enhancing national competitiveness and sustainability, especially as magnesium plays a crucial role in the production of electric vehicles, electronics, and biodegradable medical implants.
This initiative by ABM not only represents a significant step forward in the diversification of the U.S. critical minerals supply but also aligns with global efforts to transition towards more sustainable energy sources. By leveraging innovative extraction technologies, ABM aims to contribute to the reduction of the environmental footprint associated with mineral extraction, setting a precedent for responsible resource development in the energy sector.
