Children’s sports programmes allocating £100k
Eight primary schools and eight sports organisations are to receive a share of £100,000 to make it easier for children to have “sustained and prolonged engagement with sport and physical activity”.
The “Sportin Schools” and “Sportin Sport” programmes have been launched by Jersey Sport with £50,000 of funding allocated to each initiative.
The aim of the programmes is to help children access local sports and to improve community links.
Elliot Powell, head of Sport and Physical Activity at Jersey Sport said: “We look to remove barriers to activity such as cost or location, to ensure sport is accessible for all young people regardless of their background.”
Jersey Sport said the funding will be used in various ways including paid coaching, the purchase of additional kit or equipment and helping to remove financial barriers to participation.
The programmes will run across three terms, starting in November.
The primary schools involved are Grands Vaux, La Moye, Mont à L’Abbé, St John, Grouville, Mont Nicolle, Trinity and St Saviour.
The eight sports involved are:
- Netball, delivered by the Jersey Netball Association
- Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, delivered by Gracie Barra CI
- Padel, delivered by Padel for All
- Kickboxing, delivered by Samurai Kickboxing
- Squash, delivered by Jersey Squash and Racketball Association
- Softball, delivered by Jersey Softball Association
- Cricket, delivered by Jersey Cricket
- Rugby, delivered by Jersey Rugby Football Club
Mr Powell said: “We would like to thank the Government of Jersey for their support in reshaping this programme, and hope to be able to repeat it, even increasing the level of distribution on an annual basis.”
