HSR Backs ZWIA’s Updated Zero Waste Hierarchy to Promote Sustainable Resource Management
The Zero Waste International Alliance (ZWIA) has unveiled Version 8.1 of the Zero Waste Hierarchy, a critical framework for sustainable resource management, with the support of Happy Stan’s Recycling Services Ltd. (HSR). This update introduces refined principles and definitions aimed at guiding organizations, governments, and communities toward more sustainable practices.
Key enhancements in the updated hierarchy include the strengthened Do Not Export Harm principle, which addresses the responsible management of hazardous materials, and the introduction of a new Do No Harm principle to minimize negative social and environmental impacts. Additionally, the update provides clearer definitions for terms such as circular economy, closed-loop systems, composting, and recycling, facilitating a more consistent global application.
Jamie Kaminski, Chair of the ZWIA Zero Waste Hierarchy Working Group and President of HSR, emphasized the hierarchy’s role in ensuring global alignment with the term ‘Zero Waste.’ Gary Liss, Chair of the ZWIA Certifications Committee, and Richard Anthony, President of ZWIA, highlighted the hierarchy’s importance in addressing current issues like chemical recycling and advancing toward a circular economy.
HSR’s commitment to aligning its services with these updated standards underscores the company’s dedication to responsible and ethical material handling. The full release and updated version of the Zero Waste Hierarchy are available for further exploration, offering a structured approach to waste prevention and material recovery that prioritizes systemic change toward sustainability.
