Independent Artist John Keenan Announces Genre-Fluid Album ‘Wreckage of the Past’

Independent artist John Keenan has unveiled details about his forthcoming album, ‘Wreckage of the Past’, set to release on September 7, 2025. This 23-track project, entirely self-produced and written by Keenan, stands as a bold statement against the current trends in hip hop and music at large. With no guest features, the album is a pure expression of Keenan’s vision, blending hip hop with alternative, rock, soul, and cinematic influences to create a sound that defies easy categorization.

‘Wreckage of the Past’ is described as a mix of political critique, spiritual exploration, and emotional vulnerability. Keenan employs a variety of musical elements, from jazzy boom bap to trap-inspired folk-hop, alongside real instrumentation to craft a soundscape that is both innovative and deeply personal. The album’s lyrical content ranges from dissident commentary to raw personal confessions, aiming to challenge the complacency Keenan perceives in modern hip hop and the broader music industry’s focus on image and conformity.

Keenan’s approach to this project is encapsulated in his statement, ‘I wanted to make something honest enough to be dangerous.’ This ethos is the driving force behind the album and his summer-long campaign, ‘Make Hip Hop Dangerous Again’, which will feature a variety of content including short-form videos, mini-documentaries, and satire. Through this campaign, Keenan seeks to reconnect hip hop with its roots as a medium for truth, struggle, and rebellion.

‘Wreckage of the Past’ is not just an album but a call to action for artists to embrace authenticity, challenge norms, and express their truths without fear. Keenan, who has built a 20-year career on the foundation of raw lyrics and genre-blurring production, considers this project his most ambitious and vulnerable work to date. It represents both a personal reckoning and a cultural critique, offering a rare blend of melodic honesty and grounded masculine energy that seeks to inspire others to break the mold.
