Syndee Winters Pays Tribute to Lena Horne with New Jazz Album
Syndee Winters, a celebrated Broadway star and rising jazz vocalist, has released a new album titled ‘Syndee Winters Sings Lena Horne,’ a tribute to the legendary Lena Horne. The album, which debuted on what would have been Horne’s 108th birthday, June 30, is a 10-track homage distributed worldwide by The Orchard/Sony Music. Winters, known for her roles in ‘Hamilton,’ ‘Motown,’ and ‘The Lion King’ on Broadway, brings her unique blend of Broadway polish and deep jazz roots to this project, executive produced by Eulis Cathey and associate produced by Carl Griffin.
The album features reimagined classics such as ‘Stormy Weather’ and ‘If You Believe,’ alongside ‘Alive,’ an original composition by Andromeda Turre that explores resilience, serving as a spiritual companion to Horne’s defiant artistry. Winters’ tribute is not just a musical endeavor but a personal journey, as she credits Horne with helping her believe in her own voice. The project also showcases collaborations with this generation’s renowned jazz musicians, including Michael Eckroth, Freddie Hendrix, and Warren Wolf, among others.
As a Caribbean American artist, Winters embodies the legacy Horne stood for: elegance, excellence, and evolution. Her performances, characterized by vocal control and interpretive nuance, are set to captivate audiences at live events, including LACMA’s Jazz Fridays Series in Los Angeles and the NEA Jazz Master Donald Harrison’s Second Annual Quantum Leap Music Festival in New York. Winters’ tribute to Horne goes beyond revisiting jazz standards; it breathes new life into them, establishing Winters as a vital new voice in the lineage of great vocalists.
